In 2011, Greenpeace launched its Detox campaign addressing the global apparel industry with the aim of reducing the use of hazardous chemicals. In 2012, Esprit signed the commitment to cut eleven classes of chemicals from our clothing production and to work together with other companies towards a clean textile industry. As part of our sustainability commitment it is important for us to take responsibility for the environmental impacts of our manufacturing process.

Greenpeace has now published an interim report highlighting the significant progress of the industry in cutting hazardous chemicals. Even if there is still a way to go, the report “Destination Zero: seven years of Detoxing the clothing industry” points out that we have taken important steps to achieve our goal by 2020.

To help realize the Detox commitment, Esprit became an active member of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Group (ZDHC), working alongside other brands to achieve the long-term aim of the ZDHC Group’s ‘Roadmap to Zero’: Zero discharge of hazardous chemicals by 2020. We regularly publish reviews of our Detox Commitment, which gives an overview of what has already been achieved and outlines our targets for the future.

Sara Bermúdez Couto, Head of Product Safety Management & Environmental Sustainability at Esprit, comments: “We can only achieve our target - zero discharge of hazardous chemicals - when all chemical formulators participate (including smaller, local ones) and more sustainable alternative formulations become normal. Therefore, we would like to see more brands commit to Detox and join the ZDHC as a member to put more pressure on the market.”
